Royal Icing Run-Out Tinkerbell

Want to know how to make a Tinkerbell run-out in royal icing (or any item as a run-out)

First you get line drawing of the item you wish to make a run-out of. It can be almost anything but it should not have too much small detail as this can get lost quick in run-out work.

This you stick to your working surface and cover with wax paper or a hard cellophane (cling-film will not work)

Using a stiff mix of royal icing you trace the item by piping your royal icing making the outline of the figure and all areas of definition.

Once done, you can “Flood” a few initial areas of your run-out with a thinner mix of royal icing (one with more egg white added so that it will flow to flood any area it is piped into.

This is left to dry in a warm rom for four to eight hours (the longer the better, especially if you are using strong colours).

Then you come back and flood other areas.

Note how the wings are given as little icing as possible and the flood is very thin and flat, as wings should be, but the hair is flooded to bursting point giving it definition and depth.

Note how one leg was done and allowed to dry before the second and though you cannot see the line separating them now it is clear that there are two distinct legs.

If you were to do the two at the same time, the flood would merge and you would not be able to make out the two.

With the flowing of the green to make the dress, the points at the end are achieved by gently dragging the flood into the points with a pin.

Once all sections are filled and the whole piece is allowed to dry and harden, you can gently remove the max paper by slowly peeling it off.

Make sure you make lots of spares as they can break ease :-)

And the finished cake....
